Detailed Review
The Elgato 4K X Capture Card is an external video capture device designed for creators who want to stream and record high-fidelity gaming footage. It solves the problem of frame rate and resolution bottlenecks by pairing HDMI 2.1 input and output with a modern USB connection.
For visual performance, this unit handles 4K resolution capture at up to 144 frames per second, alongside support for high-frame-rate 1080p recording at up to 240fps. Built-in Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) passthrough prevents visual tearing on your gaming display, ensuring your feed remains smooth while playing.
Connectivity relies on a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, which delivers ultra-low latency to keep your live broadcast closely synchronized with your live actions. It connects across common streaming programs like OBS, Streamlabs, Twitch Studio, Zoom, and Teams, feeding platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, Discord, and Facebook Gaming.
One trade-off to keep in mind is that reaching these high frame rates and resolutions relies directly on having HDMI 2.1 gear and a compatible USB 3.2 Gen 2 port on your computer. Additionally, the provided specifications do not detail physical dimensions or included cables.
Verdict: The Elgato 4K X is an excellent choice for streamers and content creators who need high frame rate capture up to 4K144 or 1080p240. If your setup supports HDMI 2.1 and USB 3.2 Gen 2, it delivers fast, tear-free game recording across major broadcast platforms.
