Detailed Review
The Hurdaos Magnetic Wooden Chess Set provides a traditional tabletop experience with practical travel features. Designed with a 15 by 15-inch playing surface, it gives both beginners and experienced players enough room for comfortable matches without requiring a dedicated game table.
Crafted from polished walnut and maple, the folding board uses brass hinges that open flat without warping, along with aligned closure snaps to keep it shut when packed away. The 34 Staunton-style pieces feature built-in strong magnets that prevent them from sliding around if the board gets tilted or jostled. Each piece is fitted with a felt bottom to keep the wooden squares, which measure approximately 1.61 inches across, free from scratches.
Storage is integrated directly into the design. The folding board serves as a carrying case, housing interior foam cutouts that securely hold each chessman individually. This eliminates rattling while walking and ensures pieces stay organized between matches. The set also includes two additional queens for standard pawn promotion rules.
While the set is portable, its total weight of 3.6 pounds means it has some heft compared to minimalist travel boards. Additionally, while the board is explicitly listed as walnut and maple, the product details note the pieces are made of wood without naming the specific species used to carve them.
Verdict: This set is a solid choice for learners, families, and casual tournament players who want an attractive wooden board that safely stores its own pieces and stays stable on the move.
