Detailed Review
The Avantree Relay is a dedicated wireless audio transmitter designed to bring Bluetooth capability to standard 3.5 mm headphone jacks. It solves the common hassle of wired in-flight entertainment by transmitting sound directly to your personal wireless earbuds or headphones, making it easy to watch movies without tangled cables.
For shared viewing, the device connects two pairs of Bluetooth headphones or earbuds to a single audio source at the same time. Sound transmission is powered by Qualcomm technology supporting aptX Adaptive and aptX HD, delivering clear and detailed audio to compatible listening devices. Setup is straightforward: plug the unit into a 3.5 mm jack, activate pairing mode on your headphones, and connect. It also includes a dual-prong airplane adapter to fit standard airline seat jacks.
Travelers will appreciate the 25-hour battery life, which provides enough playback for long journeys. The body features integrated volume controls and a clear battery indicator so you can check remaining charge at a glance. However, the device is strictly an audio transmitter. It lacks a microphone, cannot receive Bluetooth audio, and is not designed for phone calls, televisions, hearing aids, or musical instruments.
Verdict: The Avantree Relay is an excellent choice for solo travelers and pairs who want to use their wireless headphones with airplane entertainment systems. If you need a straightforward way to share audio from a 3.5 mm jack without dealing with wires, this compact transmitter fits the bill.
