Detailed Review
The Chess and games shop Muba 21 Inch Wooden Chess Set is a full-sized, handcrafted tabletop set designed for players who want a classic aesthetic and plenty of room to play. Built from farm-grown wood, it serves equally well as an active game board and an attractive display piece for a living room or study.
The folding board measures 21.65 inches wide by 21.65 inches deep, offering spacious 2.24-inch squares made from beech and birch wood. Clear algebraic notation lines the borders, making it simple to track turns and analyze games. When you are finished playing, the board folds in half and locks securely shut with two brass clasps.
Crafted from hornbeam and sycamore, the pieces stand out for their size and balance. The king reaches 4.5 inches tall, the queen stands at 3.66 inches, and pawns measure 2.28 inches. Each piece is weighted for a solid feel on the board and features a felt bottom to protect the wood surface. Inside the folded board, dedicated molded slots store each chessman individually to prevent pieces from rattling together.
Keep in mind that at nearly 22 inches across, this board requires substantial table space and is not built for compact travel. Additionally, while the listing specifies that the pieces are weighted, it does not provide the exact overall weight of the full boxed set.
Verdict: This set is an excellent choice for chess enthusiasts who want large, weighted wooden pieces and an expansive board with built-in piece storage. It offers a handsome, traditional design suitable for regular home play or tabletop display.
