Detailed Review
The Epson FastFoto FF-680W is a dedicated sheet-fed scanner built to digitize large photo collections and everyday documents without slow manual placement. Designed for anyone facing boxes of legacy family pictures, it speeds up the archiving process by accepting stacks of mixed sizes and feeding them through automatically.
Speed and flexibility are the core strengths of this system. It digitizes standard prints at rates as fast as one photo per second at 300 dpi, handling batches of up to 36 pictures at a time. The duplex feed captures handwritten dates or notes on the back of a print in the same pass as the front image. Resolution options span 300 dpi for sharing, 600 dpi TIFF for archiving, and up to 1200 dpi for enlargements. Software tools automatically handle color restoration, auto enhancement, de-skewing, cropping, and red-eye reduction.
Beyond standard prints, the feed mechanism accommodates Polaroids, postcards, panoramic formats, and larger photos up to 8 x 10 inches. For fragile items, Epson includes a protective SafeTouch carrier sheet along with a microfiber cleaning cloth. The scanner also doubles as an office workhorse, using Epson ScanSmart software with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to convert documents up to 240 inches long into searchable text at rates up to 45 ppm or 90 ipm.
Because it is a sheet-fed mechanism, fragile or damaged photos must be placed inside the included carrier sheet rather than fed bare through the rollers. In addition, scans managed via the mobile app are capped at 600 dpi JPEG rather than the highest 1200 dpi enlargement resolution available through full desktop archiving settings.
Verdict: The FastFoto FF-680W is a capable choice for users who need to digitize large family photo archives and multi-page paperwork quickly. Its dual-sided scanning, automated restoration tools, and cloud backup integration make high-volume preservation straightforward.
