Detailed Review
The WD_BLACK 1TB P40 Game Drive SSD provides portable high-speed storage designed for players managing expanding libraries across consoles and PCs. It tackles the issue of tight internal system storage by delivering 1TB of extra capacity, allowing you to keep large installs ready without deleting your favorites.
Equipped with a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 interface, this drive reaches read speeds up to 2,000MB/s on compatible host devices. For portable use, the external housing features a shock-resistant design capable of withstanding drops from up to two meters, adding peace of mind if it gets knocked off a desk or packed into a bag.
The drive includes built-in RGB lighting that can be tailored to match your setup. Customization is managed through the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard application, giving you control over visual styles and lighting patterns.
There are a few functional boundaries to keep in mind. The RGB dashboard software is only available on Windows operating systems. Additionally, while the drive lets you directly play and store PS4 and Xbox One titles on modern systems, current-generation PS5 and Xbox Series X|S games can only be archived, meaning they must be moved back to internal storage to run.
Verdict: The WD_BLACK P40 is a reliable match for gamers who need rugged, high-speed external storage for game archiving or legacy play. It is particularly well suited for Windows PC users who want both rapid load speeds and personalized lighting control.
